Borgman to Receive Award of Merit
The Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) is delighted to announce that Professor Christine L. Borgman, Distinguished Research Professor and Presidential Chair in Information Studies Emerita at the University of California, Los Angeles is the 2019 recipient of the ASIS&T Award of Merit, the highest honor presented by the Association.

Borgman on KCBS Radio – Are Data Dividends The Solution?
Professor Borgman talked with KCBS Radio’s Susan Leigh Taylor this morning to respond to Governor Newsom’s State of the State Address. In his address, Newsom introduced plans to have his team draft a “data dividends” proposal. The idea being that, if tech companies are going to make money off your personal data, you should get a cut. Borgman discusses the cross-cultural differences regarding privacy and how policy decisions could reinforce current power structures and inequalities.
How to Think About Data: A Conversation with Christine Borgman
Professor Christine Borgman was interviewed by Dr. Dan Turello at the Library of Congress for the “Insights” blog which discusses Scholarly Work at John W. Kluge Center. Within this interview Dr. Turello and Professor Borgman discuss her experience as a woman in mathematics in the 1970s, the definition of data, digital preservation, and more. Professor Borgman is a current member of the Library of Congress Scholars Council which advises on matters related to scholarship at the Library, with special attention to the Kluge Center and the Kluge Prize.
Dr. Borgman’s October Appointments at Harvard
Professor Christine Borgman will be participating in a fellowship at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics for October 2018 with a joint appointment at the Harvard Data Science Initiative. During her CfA fellowship, Dr. Borgman plans to advance a decade-long study of astronomy data practices to ask questions about the durability and fragility of these infrastructures and the invisible work required to sustain access to data, tools, instruments, publications, documentation, and other infrastructure components. Lessons learned are expected to advance data stewardship in astronomy and other scientific domains.
